Den Amstel were crowned the Sydroy Nedd Memorial 60th birth anniversary 7-a-side Inter-Ward football champs after crushing Grove Thursday in the grand finale at the Dem Amstel ground, West Demerara.
The home side walked away with the inaugural title and the $100,000 first prize after dismantling Grove by a 5-0 score line under lights. Grove, for their efforts, captured the second place accolade and $50,000. In the third place playoff, Pouderoyen defeated Goed Fortuin by a 1-0 score line to clinch the respective trophy and $30,000. For their showing, Goed Fortuin walked away with $20,000 and the corresponding accolade.
In the two semi-finals played earlier, Den Amstel defeated Pouderoyen by a 4-0 margin while Grove downed Goed Fortuin 2-0. The quarterfinal matchups witnessed Den Amstel defeating Stewartville 4-0 while Grove dismantled Wales by an identical score line.
In the other two quarterfinal fixtures, Pouderoyen downed Sara Lodge 2-0 while Goed Fortuin upset Uitvlugt 3-2 on penalty kicks after normal time ended with the score locked at 1-1 score line.
In an earlier exhibition encounter, West Demerara Masters defeated their Georgetown counterparts on penalty kicks after normal time ended 1-1.
The event which commenced on September 19th at the same venue, was played in memory of the late West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) and Uitvlugt FC President Sydroy Nedd.
