There will be a re-birth of the Inter County Softball Cricket competition after the Guyana Softball Cricket League (GSCL) joined forces with sponsors Digicel, Crown Mining and Stag Beer to launch a two-day competition set to bowl off October 24 and 25 at the Everest Cricket Ground.
The format, which has been in the wilderness for some 14 years, was revived Friday night at the official launching ceremony held at the Crown Mining Supplies’ Dennis Street location.
Present at the launching were Ansa McAl’s PRO Darshanie Yusuf, Digicel representative Louann Abrams, GSCL President Ian John and others who were the driving force behind the tournament’s revival.
Some eight teams, two each from Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice along with one team from Linden and one from Bartica will lock horns in two rounds of highly anticipated softball cricket where the teams will be split into two groups of four for the preliminary matches.
Following the opening rounds, the four teams with the best record will then advance to the semi-final round before the grand finale between the two top teams take center stage.
According to John, the teams who do not qualify for the final stages, will be rewarded with $25,000 for their efforts while the winners will pocket a whopping $500,000 and the runners up a healthy $300,000.
There will be no fee to enter the competition.
The matches will be streamed via radio stations 93.1 FM as well as the Voice of Guyana.
International cricket commentator Inderjeet Persaud, during a brief comment, said that he was happy to see the rebirth of this particular inter county competition, adding that he hopes a regional softball tourney is something fans could see in the near future.
Yusuf and Abrams expressed delight in their companies being a part of such a ground shaking event, saying that both Digicel and Ansa McAl were committed to the development of sports and hinted at exciting promotions come the two match days.
