Slingerz recorded their first win of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League in sublime fashion, dismantling Monedderlust FC by a 3-0 score line on Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda.
Despite missing several early chances in the opening 15 minutes, the trio of Tichard Joseph, Dwayne Jacobs and Vurlon Mills settled the outcome in the 22nd, 37th and 38th minutes respectively in front of a sizable crowd.
With the win Slingerz moved into second position on the points standings with five points from three fixtures.
The Berbice outfit drop to the fifth position with three points from as many matches.
The lopsided score line commenced 22 minutes into the fixture when Slingerz was awarded a penalty kick after Domini Garnette was brought down in box. Stepping up to the mark was Joseph who finished his right footed shot into the lower left hand corner of the net.
The Vergenoegen unit should have doubled its lead one minute onwards but Jacobs missed an easy tap-in from the centre of the box into the empty net, after racing onto a flat right sided cross from Garnette.
Nonetheless he quickly made amends 14th minutes later, slotting home from within the right side of the penalty box after collecting a flat left sided cross from Hubert Pedro.
Experienced playmaker Mills then made it 3-0 six minutes before the half time interval, placing his right footed shot into the lower right hand corner from the top of the box, after racing onto a pass down the centre of the field with only the goalkeeper in his path.
Under pressure for most of the fixture, the Berbicians fashioned their first threatening attempt on goal in the 61st minute but a powerful shot from within the right side of the box was denied by the goalkeeper smartly low to his left.
That attempt would only be a brief respite for the Berbicians as the opportunities continued to be created for the West Demerara unit in the second period with Anthony Abrams being denied in the 66th minute with his strike from the top of the box.
Joseph was then denied two minutes onward from doubling his tally as his curling right footed free kick 23 yards from goal on the left side of the field, cannoned onto the crossbar.
Similarly, Abrams missed a great chance to add his name to the scorer’s sheet in the 73rd minute, flashing his left footed effort wide of the left corner from the centre of the box, after skipping past his marker.
The crossbar then came to the rescue of Monedderlust once more as a left footed free kick from Colin Nelson on the right side, was headed onto the crossbar by the defender in his attempt to thwart the danger.
The chances continued to go a-begging for Slingerz with Abrams the culprit again in the 89th minute as he fired a right footed effort wide of the left corner following a one-on-one situation with the onrushing ‘keeper.
