High voltage on West Coast

Dear Editor,

Following the change in government, many public officials were either fired or forced to resign whilst others resigned by themselves. Lots of people agree with this move although a few are claiming a “witch hunt”. Some of the so called victims are either unsuited to the position they hold or have serious attitude problems that caused lots of difficulty.

Editor, for over a month now, some residents of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara have been getting extremely high voltage (260v tested one time) in their houses, especially at night, and after many instances of damage to electrical appliances, the various technicians are of the opinion that it is being caused by a particular transformer, thus they reported it to the Guyana Power and Light West Coast/Bank branch. Repeated reports caused one resident to end up requesting to speak to the branch manager, and to his amazement, he was spoken to in what he believes was an angry manner, and was directed to report his problem to Georgetown. To date he hasn’t received any definite indication as to the location where he must lodge his complaints, and he’s a bit annoyed at the attitudes he met and decided not to pursue the matter any further.

However, what’s the purpose of a branch and a manager if consumers have to make a report somewhere else? When will the attitudes towards consumers change, or is it that changes in staff have to make a difference?

Yours faithfully,

Sahadeo Bates
