A 23-year-old man was yesterday remanded to prison after being slapped with several counts of illegal gun and ammunition possession.
The charge against Daren John stated that on September 28, he had in his possession 4 live rounds of 9 mm ammunition. Additionally, he was found to be in possession of 8 live rounds of .32 ammunition and a .38 revolver without being the holder of a valid firearm licence.
According to the facts presented to the court by the prosecution, police were conducting traffic stops when John was stopped and asked to do a breathalyzer test. It was during the test that the police officer felt an object at John’s waist. However, the accused managed to run back to his car and escape the officers before inquiries could have been made.
As a result, the officers radioed for assistance and John was intercepted and escorted to the Brickdam Police Station where a search of his car was conducted. It was during this search that the guns and ammunition were found. He was then told of the offence and subsequently charged.
John, a resident of First Street, Albert-town, pleaded not guilty to the charges which were read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Nevertheless, bail was refused and John is expected to make his next court appearance on October 12.
