Member of Parliament Dharamkumar Seeraj was on Thursday placed on $40,000 bail after being charged with dangerous driving in the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court.
Seeraj, of Lot 17 ‘B’ Eccles East Bank Demerara appeared before Magistrate Rhondel Weaver and pleaded not guilty.
According to the charge, on Thursday September 17, at Bath, West Coast Berbice, he drove motor pick up PMM 5895 in a manner dangerous to the public.
Attorney Priya Manickchand provided the court with background information on her client, and made an application for bail. She explained that her client is a responsible citizen of the country and would not skip court hearings; he has been cooperating with the police and had reported the incident to the police and assisted in transporting the police to and from the scene.
Further she stated that Seeraj who has been serving has the General Secretary of the Rice Producers Association has a fixed place of abode, is married and is a father of two adult children. She asked for bail to be at a reasonable sum.
The prosecution had no objection to bail.
Manickchand requested the result of a breathalyzer test, but was informed by the magistrate that the court did not have such, since her client was not charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to reports, Seeraj was in the process of overtaking a vehicle, when he collided with another vehicle, lost control and crashed into a truck parked on the road.
He is to return to court on October 29.
