Buxton United recorded their first win of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League, downing Monedderlust FC 1-0 Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda.
Diminutive forward Esan Charles settled the cagey and lacklustre affair with a moment of magic as he found the back of the net in the 81st minute.
Racing onto a quick throw down the left side of the field, the second half substitute upon skipping past his marker while cutting into the box, blasted his effort into the top left hand, sending his team-mates and support in a frenzy.
Due to the win, Buxton moved into seventh position on three points, leapfrogging Monedderlust (also on three points) because of their superior head-to-head record after both teams possess the same -3 goal difference.
With both sides failing to find any rhythm in the opening exchanges, the first dangerous opportunity fell to Monedderlust in the 36th minute but Dawit Watts was denied by the legs of the onrushing custodian Jason Cromwell, after racing onto a through pass within the right side of the box.
On the opposite end, Tyrone Harper should have also given his side their first goal in the 41st minute but he was denied by the Monedderlust ‘keeper just inside the centre of the box, following a one-on-one situation.
Kevin Cottoy was next to come close for the Berbicians, firing his effort wide of the lower right corner from within the centre of the box, after racing between two defenders to collect the ball.
The fixture continued in the same trend in the second period with the first threatening attempt falling to Clive Andries in the 76th minute.
With only the ‘keeper in his path within the left side of the box, Andries opted against lobbing the onrushing custodian, only to shot a tame right footed strike into the body of his opponent.
Nonetheless the East Coast of Demerara unit finally broke the deadlock five minutes onward compliments of solo effort from Charles.
Similarly Monedderlust almost snatched the equaliser in the 89th minute but Kelvin Joseph was denied by Cromwell who raced off his line to deny the forward within the left side of the box, after the striker had skipped around his marker.
In the other matchup, Alpha United dismissed Fruta Conquerors 2-0 to climb to the top of the points standings.
