Staff at the headquarters of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) are calling for urgent action to be taken to address unhealthy conditions under which they are working.
Workers, who asked not to be named, complained to Stabroek News of having to work in the building which is infested with mold.
The mould, which developed as a result of numerous leakages in the building, has begun to affect the health of workers, several of whom have developed respiratory ailments.
In August, Chairman of the GRA board Rawle Lucas had said that an examination by staff from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure had deemed the building “sufficiently safe” for continued occupation, though a long term solution was being sought.
Lucas had described the building as a sieve.
When Stabroek News contacted Lucas about the reports of mould, he explained that attempts have been made to secure a space to temporarily relocate the staff but so far they have been unable to source a building large enough to house the entire staff.
“We don’t want to break up services again. I think there is a level of comfort the public gets from being able to access all GRA services at one location, so we are trying to find a space that is large enough,” he said.
Lucas explained that the administration of GRA is also in the process of tendering for clean-up services to facilitate the removal of the mould.
