Dear Editor,
Seven long years have passed and NIS is still to get my contributions right in order for me to obtain my pension benefits. According to my calculation the contributions made by me reach 834, which is in excess of the 750 required to qualify for a pension.
A document from my employer, the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) was sent to the NIS office verifying that I was employed there from September l5, 1995 with unbroken service up to March, 31, 2008 at the time of retirement. But from the list of contributions for this period as provided by NIS nothing was mentioned for several years, and the anomaly remained in the absence of any effort to have it rectified. Numerous visits were made by me to the NIS office to have this matter resolved, but it was just useless as no proper attempt was made for this to be done, with my time and travelling money just being wasted.
It is very clear from my calculation that 274 contributions have been left out, and that once these are added on to those that can be accounted for it will make me eligible for my pension. Before my employment with T&HD, I had already made 234 contributions whilst working elsewhere, with the latter accounting presently for 326 making a total of 560. Once the record of my contributions during my employment with T&HD can be rectified the total will reach 834 surpassing the 750 needed to qualify for a pension.
It has been exhausting going back and forth and it would only be proper for positive action to be taken to bring an end to this matter once and for all.
Yours faithfully,
Keith Walcott
