In an unprecedented deal yesterday, the rebranded GTT and the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) inked a three-year $13.5M deal that will see the telecommunications giant supporting the union’s local programmes for the next three years.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the two sides at GTT’s Brickdam headquarters to officially agree on the terms and conditions of the ground breaking partnership that will see GTT shelling out $4.5M annually.
Newly re-elected GRFU president, Peter Green described the pact as a life saver for the union.
“This programme that GTT is embarking on is in essence the lifesaving support that we have been asking for when we were pushing for development at the local level.”
Green who welcomed GTT to the rugby family once again added “In many instances, the local programme has suffered in our quest to keep the flag of Guyana flying. Hard earned revenue had to be diverted for international participation but with the coming onboard of GTT, they have given us the breathing space that is required for this new young executive to move forward and plan for the overall development of rugby in Guyana.”
After voicing his “heartfelt gratitude” to the company, Green stated that “We have given them (GTT) the programmes and they have the confidence to back us. It’s now for this new executive to deliver.”
GTT’s Senior Marketing Officer Anjanie Hackett noted that with the signing of the MoU, the union would be in a better position to organise its annual domestic programmes and develop annual school’s tournaments as well.
“Our support aims to foster and promote the sport of rugby at the National level.”
Hackett further noted that “Over the years, the company has supported the GRFU at various levels, domestically and internationally and we have seen the sport grow and develop good athletes and we believe that with our support over the next three years, the sport and rugby players will be further developed.
She concluded by extending best wishes to the GRFU and encouraged the players to do more “as we do more for the development of the sport.”
