The Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) on Friday joined 192 countries in commemorating World Post Day 2015 which was celebrated under the theme ‘Innovation, Integration and Inclusion are the key drivers for the Future of the Post.’
In a message to mark the occasion, Minister in the Ministry of Public Infrastructure Annette Ferguson noted that, “The Post has established itself to be the oldest form of communication; transforming economies, changing lives and connecting people.” And as such, “we should commit to ensuring that Post survives and strives for the next few hundred years. Let us innovate and integrate our peoples, systems and talents to take advantage of the unifying elements of Post.”
She added, “The relevance of post rests on the shoulders of a committed pool of individuals, our frontline and office workers, most of whom work tirelessly to ensure that our customers are served, regardless of the circumstances. We must all embrace change; change our thinking, change our actions and secure our future.”
Giving the feature address at an award ceremony which was held in the hall of the GPOC, Ferguson offered promises of transformation for the postal sector.
“My ministry will ensure that all systems are in place to transform the post office into an organisation that will be second to none. Technology, staff development, youth products and services and even enhanced infrastructure will be part of this transformation,” Ferguson remarked.
Further, she highlighted working conditions as being an issue that she plans to pay special attention to. “Of extreme importance, will be working conditions of you, the staff. Everyone will feel as though they are a part of the GPO family. But we must all work together, collectively, in order to achieve these goals. Management and other staff at all levels must work together to achieve the success we need in these modern times,” she remarked.
Several GPOC staff from across the country were honoured with certificates and tokens of appreciation for their contributions to the postal operations.
Additionally, the postal body rewarded 3 students for their performance at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate and National Grade Six Assessment examinations.
World Postal Day is celebrated on October 9 every year. According to Abdul Hassan, Post Master General (ag), it is a day that is specially designated to create awareness about the role of the postal sector and to strategize on the future with the expectation that visionary programmes will be implemented.
