National cyclist Raynauth Jeffrey returned to the local circuit with a bang yesterday.
Fresh off a competitive stint in the United States of America, the Team Coco’s standout brought his talents to the National Park and lapped the entire 23-man field to take the top honors of the feature 35-lap event of the 11th Hand in Hand Insurance programme.
Clad in the new Team Coco’s lime green racing kit, Jeffrey took pole position in one hour, 17 minutes and one second. His win, which came in perfect conditions for racing, was so dominant that he carted off six of the eight sprint prizes after lapping the field half way into the event.
Jeffrey’s club mate, Hamzah Eastman and Team Gillette Evolution’s Raul Leal joined him on the podium while Junior Niles (Team Coco’s), Guyana Cycling Federation’s president Horace Burrowes and Stephano Husbands also of Team Coco’s filled out the top six paid positions.
Other winners yesterday included John Niles (BMX Boys 6-9 years), Simon Chee (BMX Boys 9-12 years), Adelia Hodge (BMX Boys 12-14 years), Ronaldo Narine (12-14 Boys and Girls), Junior Niles (Veterans Under 50 years), Linden Blackman (Veterans Over 50 years), Jamal John (Juveniles) and Shane Bourne (Mountain Bike) Besides its exclusive sponsorship of the annual fixture, Hand-in-Hand Insurance also continued its trend of distributing BMX bicycles and helmets to three promising young riders.
This year’s beneficiaries were Ajani Cutting, John Niles and Simon Chee. The company’s representatives Savita Singh, Chandranie Karran and Bonicka Gordon were on hand to witness the races and assist in the presentation of prizes following the Hassan Mohamed organized event.
The cycling season continues this morning (7:30hrs) with the fourth annual Kadir Mohamed Memorial Ounce of Gold road race.
