In a bid to attract more regional and international tourists, Guyana is seeking to work closely with Suriname and French Guiana towards destination marketing.
Tourism Minister Cathy Hughes recently concluded a visit to Suriname to promote the yachting industry but she also met with the Minister of Tourism and Communication of Suriname Falisie Pinas and they discussed destination marketing.
Hughes told a news conference on Thursday that Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana have been hamstrung by limited resources but she also noted their great potential to market themselves internationally.
She added that while Guyana’s main airport may have been limited to certain direct international flights, Suriname receives about eight direct flights from Holland on a weekly basis. With the network being created, the minister expressed hope that Guyana can now benefit from those direct flights to Suriname from Europe.
Hughes further noted that the Ministry of Tourism is working to design and implement a five-year National Tourism Policy, which should be completed by the first quarter of 2016. In moving the industry forward, regional and international cooperation will be also utilised, the minister said.
