The sixth round of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League will commence with a titanic clash when sixth positioned Guyana Defence Force (GDF) opposes the second placed Slingerz FC today at the GDF ground from 20:30hrs.
Defence continues to be the hallmark of the West Demerara unit who have only conceded once to date through their compact and discipline line up of Colin Nelson, Jolanshoy McDowall, Joshua Browne and Winslow McDowall. A similar showing will be expected.
While they have scored six goals to date, offensively the star-studded roster of Domini Garnette, Dwain Jacobs, Tichard Joseph, Vurlon Mills, Anthony Abrams and Dexroy Adams have been guilty of poor finishing within the final third. They must remedy this situation if they are to emerge with the win.
On the other side, the army outfit has gradually improved with every fixture and will be a dangerous proposition come kick off time.
From an attacking standpoint, the hosts have recorded seven goals thus far, with Delroy Fraser the principal hitman with three goals alongside the versatile Eusi Phillips who has scored twice. They will also be boosted by the return of Delwyn Fraser from suspension.
In the rearguard, the army side has been inconsistent with eight goals already shipped in. An improvement must be achieved, with the veteran duo of Seon Prince and Selwyn Isaacs marshalling the troops when play commences. In the opening fixture at 18:00hrs, third positioned Alpha United will attempt to make up ground on the league leader Pele when they oppose cellar occupant Buxton United.
Held to a 1-1 draw in their previous encounter, the ‘Hammers’ will be aiming to walk away with three points and will hope that their capable strike force of Kithson Bain, Daniel Wilson, Delon Lanferman, William Europe and Dwayne Lawrence can add to their seven goals scored to date.
On the defence end, they possess the second best record with only three goals conceded. This trend must be maintained if they are to be successful against the energetic Buxtonians, with the experienced duo of Quincy Madramootoo and Wayne Elias in combination with Sherwin Skeete leading from the front.
Meanwhile, Buxton United find themselves in an undesirable position following their defeat in the last encounter. Goal scoring continues to be the main problem for the East Coast of Demerara unit with only two goals recorded thus far.
This facet must be improved, with the trident of Clive Andries, Denver Dennis and Esan Hamer the primary threats going forward. Defensively, Buxton have suffered due to their inability to find the back of the net, conceding seven goals to date.
Winner of the round will pocket $4,000,000 while the second, third and fourth place teams will collect $2,000,000, $1,000,000 and $500,000 respectively. Similarly, the point’s leader prior to the knockout stage in the League Genesis round will pocket an additional $1,000,000.
