Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge is representing Guyana at the Ministerial Meeting on food security and climate adaptation in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in Milan, Italy from October 14 -16.
According to a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA), the meeting’s objective is to enhance food security, health and wellbeing in the SIDS. In so doing, ambassadors and ministers of the SIDS will be given the opportunity to explore the implications of SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway in relation to food security and nutrition, and climate change adaptation.
The meeting has scheduled five major areas of focus namely: sustainable agriculture and fisheries; livelihoods, especially for women; access to food, inclusive of global and domestic trade (with regard to price volatility of food imports and commodities, as well as reliability of transport networks); and resilience of agriculture and fisheries to climate change, ocean acidification and disaster sessions.
In addition to the focus areas, GINA said, the meeting’s format will allow for “a high level of interaction and networking, to ideally allow SIDS delegates, not only to learn and exchange ideas, but also to develop and pursue possible partnerships to advance food security in SIDS.”
