President David Granger has defended salary hikes for his ministers which range as high as 50% for those in Cabinet.
Questioned on the interview programme `The Public Interest’, which aired this evening, Granger said among other things that the decision to raise the salaries was not taken lightly and it must be seen as an investment in good governance. He also made the argument that the ministers in question would have entered Cabinet from positions where they were earning similar amounts. He said that the decision to raise salaries will be borne out in the future as a prudent one.
In office since only May, the decision by the APNU+AFC government to substantially raise the salaries of ministers while only given a modest increase to public servants as prompted torrents of criticism.
