The first Mexican Taco franchise in the region opened yesterday at the Giftland Mall Food Court.
Isidro Espinosa, one of the owners of the restaurant, said that while there are two other restaurants in Mexico, this is the first time that the franchise has ventured to the Caribbean, although plans are in the making to expand operations to either Trinidad and Tobago or Jamaica in the near future.
Espinosa explained that with the Mexican Taco, Guyanese can look forward to “the real country taste of Mexico.”
When asked why the Giftland Mall was selected for Mexican Taco, Espinosa said the mall provided all the features of an area that has a “good quality environment.”
Proprietor of the Giftland Mall Roy Beepat emphasised his aim to make the mall a culturally diverse setting for the Guyanese public.
“Today is another step in the evolution of where the mall is destined to go and where it’s going,” Beepat noted. He further explained that in the near future patrons will have the option of choosing from a wide variety of foods, including Italian, East Indian, Chinese and West Indian.
Mexican Ambassador Ivan Robero Sierra Medel lauded the proprietors of Mexican Taco for their efforts in bringing authentic and delicious Mexican cuisine to Guyana.
Included on the menu are tacos, sopes, and quesadillas, among others. Espinosa also indicated his intention to make several traditional Mexican drinks available, such as the Horchata, a beverage that made from oats and rice.
According to Espinosa, all of the cooks employed by restaurant are Guyanese, who underwent three weeks of training in order perfect their preparation of the foods. Additionally, he noted that all suppliers of meat and produce are Guyanese, with the cornmeal being the only product that the restaurant will be importing from neighbouring Venezuela.
