In the framework of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Independence of Guyana, Mexico and this country are cooperating on a project for the preservation of its documented heritage and development of its archives, a release from the Mexican Embassy said on Friday.
Two Mexican experts from the General National Archives advised on the digitization of historical documents to make them available to the public through an online portal. The release said that the experts also carried out a diagnosis of the collections and taught an introductory course in the field of conservation and possible actions for implementation.
Participants in the training activities had the opportunity to learn about conservation strategies and the experience of the General National Archives. The workshop focused on designing a management strategy to meet the needs of preservation and dissemination of the documental collections with materials dating from the 18th century.
The release said that the two Mexican experts met with Dr. Nicolette Henry, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, within the Ministry of Education.
This project, the release said, is an effort to support Guyana in the conservation of its historical documental heritage, “which is vital to ensure the right to access information and which supports the sense of national identity through documents that record the history of the country”.
It added that the project is part of the bilateral efforts and the joint work of the General National Archives, the National Archives of Guyana and the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation which aims to strengthen human resources in Guyana via the transfer of the knowledge and experience of Mexican specialists.
