One week after going down to the UG Wolves, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) outfit marched past the student ruggers to claim the Banks 7s Championship trophy at the campus ground.
GDF held their nerve and managed to turn the tables on the Wolves to regain the coveted trophy 17-14 in a seesaw game that went down to the wire under the floodlights.
Captain Patrick King directed his charges with military efficiency and was backed up by powerhouse winger and tournament MVP winger Avery Corbin and fellow national player, Dwayne Schroeder which enabled the soldiers to exact revenge against the Rondell ‘Bull’ McArthur-led unit. Corbin’s two tries in the final (six for the tournament) along with a try and a conversion by Schroder was enough for the militia men to dethrone last year’s winner of the Banks 7s trophy.
Lance Adonis’ try and two conversions along with an Owen Adonis try could not get the job done for the Wolves.
“It was a great victory knowing that we lost last week” King said in a post-match interview.
“This was a big victory for us because this is a bigger tournament than the one last week. We went back to the drawing board and everyone wanted it. It was sweet revenge.”
October has been rewarding for the Guyana Defence Force’s sportsmen and women. On Friday at the National Track and Field Centre the GDF athletes retained the Joint Services Championship. Rugby action continues next week with the hosting of a Schools Tournament. (Emmerson Campbell)
