Marc Angoy, the man wanted for the murder of toddler Arianne Gill, yesterday surrendered to the police with his attorney and confessed to the crime hours after, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed.
Blanhum told Stabroek News that Angoy, a former member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), confessed after a lengthy interview with investigators. His hands were also swabbed for gun powder residue and those swabs will be sent to the forensic laboratory for examination, Blanhum added.
Less than a day after the police force issued a wanted bulletin for Angoy, of Buzz Bee Dam, Craig, East Bank Demerara, he turned himself in at the Grove Police Station at around 8.20am.
Gill, who was 13 months, was shot in her back, while 12-year-old Ashley Wellington was shot to her left foot at their Eastville Housing Scheme home on Sunday, when Angoy opened fire on them through a window. Wellington is currently in a stable condition in hospital.
Angoy had previously shared a three-year relationship with Shelly Norton, who is the grandmother of the dead toddler and mother of Wellington, but she ended it just over a month ago due to continuing abuse.
She was believed to have been the target of Sunday’s attack.
Before turning himself in, Angoy had called Norton twice on Monday afternoon and informed her that “it is not yet over.”
A police source informed this newspaper that during his confession Angoy said his intention was to kill Norton and not Gill.
He also reportedly told them that he got very angry when he found out Norton obtained a restraining order preventing him from coming into contact with her, since he had assisted her financially and helped build a foundation for her life during their time together.
Norton had told this newspaper that she was resting in her bedroom, while the children were in the living room watching television when the attack occurred.
“I jump up and see Ashley running with Arianne in she hand heading to the back of the house and I see Marc at the window with the gun in he hand just shooting,” the woman had recounted.
She said Angoy was unable to enter the house since it is secured with grills but he pushed his hands through a window and fired his gun. “I run in the bathroom to hide and I see Ashley foot bleeding and when I check [Arianne] I see she get shoot in she back and like she did get black out,” Norton added.
