A ‘B’ Field Sophia youth has been remanded to prison pending his next court date after he was charged with gun and ammunition possession in a city court yesterday.
It is claimed that 17-year-old Michael Cliffe, of Lot 140 ‘B’ Field, Sophia, was found in possession of a .37 magnum revolver and five .38 rounds of ammunition on October 18 in the vicinity of Kitty, Georgetown.
The defendant, who was represented by attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Fung-A-Fat reported to the court that on the day in question, Cliffe was walking on the street when the police saw a gun on the roadway and pushed it into the defendant’s pants and told the accused that he had to claim the weapon.
Fung-A-Fat requested reasonable bail on behalf of his client, citing the defendant’s age as a special reason for bail to be granted.
Deniro Jones, case prosecutor, objected to the bail application, countering that no special reasons existed and proceeded to give an account of the episode as provided by the police.
According to Jones, the police had been acting on information on October 18 when they went to a known drugs block located at Alexander Street, Kitty. He went on to state that while there, the investigating ranks met the defendant and when they searched his person, found the firearm hidden in the crotch of his pants.
According to the prosecution, the police are currently awaiting the reports of the ballistics examination.
Cliffe was denied bail and ordered to be remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan until November 9, when he will return for the next hearing of his matter, to be held in court 10.
