Teen accused of attempted murder after stabbing

A teen hailing from the village of Kamarang, located in the Upper Mazaruni region, yesterday appeared before a city court to face a charge of attempted murder.

Tim Brown, 17, was accused of wounding Romel Edwin on October 11th, at Jawalla Village, with the intent to commit murder.

The young man, who was represented by attorney Nigel Hughes, was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

Hughes told the court that Brown was visiting friends in the village when they were attacked by a group of males, fuelling a fight between the parties. The attorney stated that the defendant has no prior offences and is not a flight risk.

The police prosecutor’s facts concerning the event differed somewhat in the details. Case prosecutor Deniro Jones related that on the day in question, the accused was drinking at a shop in Jawalla, when a misunderstanding led to him assaulting the virtual complainant’s brother. The complainant, Edwin, then tried to intervene but was stabbed in the stomach during the altercation. According to the prosecutor, the victim’s intestines were pulled out during the fight and the man is currently in a critical condition at the hospital.

Jones’ application for bail to be denied due to the gravity of the offence was upheld by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who ordered Brown to be remanded to prison until December 14th, when the matter will be called at the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court.
