Representatives of the Transparency Institute of Guyana Incorporated (TIGI) held talks with President David Granger yesterday on collaboration to tackle any incidence of corruption within state agencies, the Ministry of the Presidency said.
The meeting was held at the ministry, where a TIGI delegation met with both President Granger and Minister of Social Cohesion Amna Ally.
According to a ministry statement, TIGI President Calvin Bernard, Directors Christopher Ram and Compton Meerabux, First Vice-President Ayana McCalman, Second Vice-President Aruna Budhram and member Troy Thomas represented the organisation.
Following the meeting, Ram was reported as saying that while the engagement was intended to be a courtesy call, a number of issues were raised with the president.
“It was a very open and very cordial discussion on a wide range of topics, including corruption, of course, and the ranking of Guyana on the Corruption Perception Index,” Ram said.
He added that corruption was raised with the Head of State, since it is something the organisation is very concerned about and it has implications for investment.
“We talked about corruption in the public service; we talked about some of the legislation, the Police Complaints Authority. The president expressed his own views on the Public Service College, which he thinks is going to go some way in dealing with the issue of corruption,” Ram added.
Noting his satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting, Ram said President Granger has committed to facilitating a meeting with the Minister of Governance Raphael Trotman and the Minister of Legal Affairs Basil Williams.
This meeting, Ram said, will allow the president and his team peruse the points raised by his organisation, with the aim of addressing them.
