Bravados Cricket Club Captain Earl Gilkes produced an all-round performance which helped his team defeat Better Hope Sports Club by 109 runs in the East Coast Cricket Board’s (ECCB) second-division final played last Sunday at the Better Hope Ground.
Marcus Watkins, 44, Anthony Ifill, 40, GIlkes, 37 and Rawle Merrel, 34, Bravados notched up 242 all out in 39 overs. Amir Khan, 2-20, Jayadev Mana 2-36 and Daniel Kowlessar 2-38 were the main wicket takers.
Better Hope crumbled to 133 all out with Seon Simpson the pick of the bowlers with 4-31 while Gilkes picked up 3-22 and Alex Cully 2-28.
Khan struck five fours in his top-score of 42 not out while Mulchan Singh (18) and Daniel Kowlessar (13) lent useful support.
At the presentation ceremony following the match, Gilkes was named man of the match while Khan was given a medal for his outstanding performances in both departments. Vice-President of the ECCB Raymond Barton spoke briefly about the competition, the challenges and the successes explaining that the new tournament attracted 31 teams.
President of Better Hope Sports Club, Jagnarine Singh said while he was disappointed in not winning the competition, he is satisfied with the hard work and the fact that his boys reached the final in a competitive zone meant well, but urged his team to redouble its effort in the next competition.
President of the ECCB, Bissoondyal Singh congratulated both teams for reaching the final and Bravados for winning the competition. In addition, Singh expressed his gratitude to Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall, corporate Guyana, the clubs, the NDC’s and the umpires for their continuous contributions and support for development of cricket on the East Coast of Demerara.
