A newspaper vendor is nursing several wounds about her body after she was chopped several times by her reputed husband with whom she had shared an abusive relationship for the past few years. The man then inflicted several stabs to his own body.
Denise Fredericks of Lot 4669 Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown sustained chops to her head, face and hands. She had to undergo a surgery to her left hand which sustained several chops and was treated and sent away. Andre Robertson, her reputed husband and father of her youngest son, is currently admitted under guard in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing two self-inflicted stab wounds.
Speaking to Stabroek News from her home yesterday afternoon Fredericks, who had bandaged hands and stitches to the other chops she sustained, said on Friday morning she had just left a newspaper outlet where she purchases newspaper to sell and set out for the days business. She was in walking distance away from her home when Robertson approached her speaking in a soft tone.
“He walk up to me normal and said good morning and I answer very calmly and he ask me why is it I treating him like this,” Fredericks said. She said she asked him how she was treating him but got no answer.
Fredericks recalled that she had picked up a single newspaper and was reading it and saw Robertson push his hand in his pocket. “I see he push he hand in he pocket not knowing is a cutlass he had in there,” Fredericks said. “He just start to fire chops and I put my left hand to block… because is my neck he was aiming for and he just chop till he fall to the road because he did drunk.”
Since it was early in the morning, she said, a number of persons were returning from their normal morning exercise and rushed to her assistance.
“He tell me he gon kill me then kill heself,” the injured woman said, while recalling that Robertson also had a knife in his possession, with which he inflicted a stab to his abdomen and another to his throat.
The police were informed and arrived on the scene where they rushed both Roberson and Fredericks to the GPH. According to the woman, they recovered the knife and cutlass he used.
The vendor said she had shared an abusive relationship with Fredericks who was recently released from prison after he was sentenced to three months imprisonment for abusing her.
She clearly stated to this newspaper when questioned, that she was unaware as to why he attacked her on Friday morning.
