Dear Editor,
About a month ago at approximately 7:00pm the street lamp obliquely opposite my house became extremely bright, which made all the neighbours rush outside thinking it was a fire, and then went out entirely and since then we have been left without light in the street.
I called the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated the following day and reported that the light was not working but they advised me that they were not responsible for street lights and that I should contact the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) in my area. I contacted the Buxton/Foulis NDC immediately after speaking with the personnel from GPL but was informed by them that they were not responsible for street lights.
In the Sunday Stabroek dated 18 October 2015, a notice was placed by the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated informing the public that they were not responsible for the provision of street lights and that the Town Council and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils were responsible for the provision and maintenance of street lights.
Two weeks ago, a young woman was robbed of her cellular phone and handbag while returning home from classes at the University of Guyana.
Editor, we seem to be returning to the days when there were no street lights and you had to be home before dark in the event that you were choked and robbed by someone lurking in the area.
Yours faithfully,
Jennifer Kanhai
