Alpha United jumped to second position in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League, downing nine member Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 3-0 Sunday at the Tucville Community ground.
Delon Lanferman fired in a double in the 11th and 56th minutes to take his tally to seven goals in the tournament while Daniel Wilson scored in the 75th minute to seal the result. With the win, Alpha now has 16 points and occupy the second position.
The GDF remains on 11 points and in fifth position. Suffering a 3-0 defeat in their last fixture to Pele FC, the ‘Hammers’ got off to the perfect start 11 minutes into play as Lanferman slotted home into the back of the net from within the box, after receiving a flat left sided cross.
It almost became 2-0 eight minutes later but Sherwin Skeete headed his attempt over the crossbar after collecting a right-side cross from within the box.
The score eventually increased 11 minutes into the second period as Lanferman scored, lobbing his effort from outside the right of the box over the head of the goalkeeper onto the right upright and into the back of the net.
It then went from bad to worse for the army side as Aubrey Greene was shown a straight red card in the 68th minute for handling the ball to deny Lanferman a clear goal scoring opportunity just outside the centre of the box.
Further misery would befall the army unit as Gavin Wilson was sent off in the 72nd minute after picking up his second yellow card.
Alpha United quickly capitalized on their numerical advantage as Wilson scored three minutes later, racing pass the two centrehalves down the middle of the goal before slotting his effort past the advancing goalkeeper.
The ‘Hammers’ almost increased their lead in the 78th minute but Steffon Ramsay directed his header unchallenged over the crossbar after collecting a left sided corner kick within the six yard box.
Lanferman was then denied one minute onward from sealing his hat-trick, turning and smashing his effort onto the legs of the ‘keeper from within the right side of the box.
Dwayne Lawrence was guilty of wasting an opportunity for Alpha United in the 81st minute as he was denied by the onrushing ‘keeper within the centre of the box, following a one-on-one situation.
The fourth goal continued to evade the ‘Hammers’ as Lanferman was denied by the goalkeeper from within the centre of the area, after receiving a through pass from the centre of the field. In the feature contest, league leader Pele and Fruta Conquerors battled to a scoreless draw.
Action in the event continues today at the GDF ground with a doubleheader. In the opening fixture at 18:00hrs, Pele will oppose the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) while home side GDF will tackle Monedderlust FC in the feature contest from 20:30hrs.
