Alpha United recorded their second win in as many matches, downing a disjointed Fruta Conquerors by a 2-0 margin when the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League continued on Wednesday at the Camp Ayanganna ground.
Second half goals from Delon Lanferman and Stellon David in the 53rd and 87th minutes respectively relegated the Tucville unit to their fourth defeat in the championship. With the win, Alpha United move into the second position with 19 points.
Fruta Conquerors on the other hand, drop to the fifth position with 12 points. It was also second the loss for the Tucville side to the ‘Hammers’ in the event following their first round defeat by the identical score line.
Following a score less opening period of a few chances, Alpha United snatched the lead eight minutes into the second stanza as a botched header by the centre half following a left-sided cross allowed Lanferman to run on within the centre of the box and finish clinically past the keeper.
Alpha should have doubled their lead two minutes later as Lanferman upon pouncing on a defensive miscommunication between the centre halves, raced into a one-on-one opportunity with the custodian, only for his control to fail him as the keeper thwarted the danger.
On the other side, Eon Alleyne almost levelled the score in the 58th minute as a curling left-footed free kick from just outside the right of the penalty area, was tipped over the crossbar by shot-stopper Dorville Stewart.
The woodwork then came to the rescue of the ‘Hammers’ one minute later as Jermin Junior thumped his effort onto the crossbar after pouncing on a loose ball within the left side of the penalty box.
Daniel Wilson then went close to adding his name to the scorer’s sheet in the 75th minute, lashing a powerful right-footed strike which was tipped around the right upright by the Fruta Conquerors keeper.
The equaliser continued to evade the Tucville unit in the 83rd minute as Junior upon cutting into the right side of the penalty box, fired his right-footed attempt wide of the lower right-hand corner.
Kwame LaFleur was then given a chance to level the proceedings two minutes onward as a right-sided cross from Junior was met by the head of the forward who could only direct his effort into the body of the centre half.
Nevertheless, the contest was settled two minutes before the end of normal time as David scored, blasting a powerful free kick from 2 yards out in the centre of the field, which went inexplicably through the raised hands of the keeper and into the net.
The opening matchup of the night witnessed third-positioned unit Slingerz FC downing sixth placed Buxton United by a 4-0 score line.
Winner of the round will pocket $4,000,000 while the second, third and fourth place teams will collect $2,000,000, $1,000,000 and $500,000 respectively. Similarly, the point’s leader prior to the knockout stage in the League Genesis round will pocket an additional $1,000,000.
