A well-planned operation by police has resulted in the arrest of the prime suspect in the murder of Akeem Yorrick, who was shot dead at Sparendaam in August.
A police source told Stabroek News that the suspect was arrested at a house at Ithaca, Berbice, on Thursday. He is to be arraigned on Monday.
This newspaper was told that ranks of ‘C’ Division, after receiving information on the man’s location, travelled to Berbice and made the arrest.
In a statement, police yesterday credited the arrest to diligent investigative work and noted that legal advice has already been sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on how to proceed.
Police had said that Yorrick was shot when a group of residents confronted a man, whom they accused of being involved in an armed robbery, at his home at the Sparendaam Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara on August 5th.
During the ensuing altercation, the man discharged a round into the group and fatally wounded Yorrick, 23, of Prince William Street, Plaisance, and escaped. Yorrick was shot once to his abdomen and died while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Hospital.
Meanwhile, police said two other suspects, who were part of a three man gang that robbed Gansham Jorie and two family members of a car, cash and jewellery on Thursday at their Prospect, Mahaica home, were positively identified during an identification parade. The vehicle along with part of the booty was recovered and charges are to be instituted shortly, the statement added.
