Of recent, I find myself being drawn towards buying the impractical and cute as opposed to the necessary and basic. I find myself easily justifying and listing countless reasons why I would need a bag that can’t even hold my phone and wallet whilst quickly shutting down the practicality of buying something for everyday use; you know like a good ‘old’ pair of working shoes.
It’s this weird obsession and I guess the feeling and need to procure fashion in this manner is due to fast fashion and the digital fashion craze. We don’t buy new outfits just because anymore, we buy new outfits to feed our compulsive fashion egos via the social media. I feel a desire to have something new and stimulating as often as possible.
It has become so hard to resist this feeling because clothes have become dog cheap or as some would say as cheap as disposables; making you feel, that this constant need for change is ok because it’s cheap anyway.
There are just too many options and not only in the arena of fast fashion but luxury as well. The two are now placed on the same price points when luxury goes on sale, thanks to Yoox.com. I find it hard to recycle my looks and find my true style because having everything is becoming a reality for a very small price. So why not try a bit of everything really?
This has led to me dishing out dollars on a bag that I honestly know I wouldn’t wear as often as I should to get the real return on the investment. It feels like I have put investing on the back burner. Though saddening and frightening to think of what my fashion habits have become, it just somehow feels more financially moral to spend less and have more.
It’s not that I no longer think investing in timeless pieces are a good idea. It is just a tad bit crazy, a shift, if you will, to ‘tryout pieces.’ That being said, I wanted to share with you my latest impulsive fashion buys and three investment staples I am currently contemplating.
The Lipstick bag
This is such a popular bag on Instagram. I think it’s a great statement piece, though it’s only suitable for a few looks and settings. It’s like owning a Barbie: you feel precious and perfect with it. It fulfils some sort of ‘Girly Fashion Code’. I got it from Pieces and Things.
The Coca-Cola bag
This bag can only hold a lipstick and money. It is so tiny inside, despite the outward appearance. I slightly regret buying it because I know it’s not a classic like the drink. It is just pop culture fashion having its classic effect on me. It will be easily forgotten when the next big thing comes along and wouldn’t be remotely as special as the Lipstick bag. I got this one from Little Black Dress and Co at Westmall in Trinidad and Tobago.
The three investment pieces I am aiming to buy this year, well for Christmas really, are a leather bag for work and black and nude Mary Jane shoes.
As much as fashion will change, I think these are three things that I will always need, well for work at least, since I can’t exactly be a walking fashion experiment in a stable working environment.
