In an earlier article, I had implored the authorities to put in place a maintenance plan with the hope of raising the awareness and importance of our trees; to no avail.
The National Day of Tree Planting exercise has just concluded and the small trees and seedlings have been left to the mercy of the scorching sun with little or no water to adapt to their new environment. Also, no staking was done to protect these small trees from heavy wind. Many have already downed their heads while drug addicts had a field day removing some. No one thought of putting protective tree boxes around these small trees planted on the roadside. Some of these seedlings were too small to be plant out in the city. How thoughtless and selfish have mankind become?
I wonder if the organizer had asked the Protective Areas Commission (PAC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for their advice on this important exercise? Why have they taken a backseat?
People in North America and Europe pay a leg and arm during the winter months to see some greenery and sunshine. Other people worldwide are planting and protecting their trees while ours are left unprotected. Can the relevant authorities please put a maintenance plan in place to help these poor small trees? Or else this exercise would have been a waste of time and resources.
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
