Accused in pavilion death cleared

Morris Kowlessar, called “Little,” yesterday walked out the High Court a free man, after a 12-member jury found him not guilty of murdering Ganesh Rattan, also known as “Jukka.”

The charge against Kowlessar is that on March 18, 2012, at Strathavon Pavilion, Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara, he murdered Rattan. It was the state’s case that on March 18, the two had an altercation, in which Kowlessar pushed Rattan off a pavilion. Later, a post-mortem examination performed on Rattan’s body by Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh revealed that the father of four died as a result of a fractured spine.

The jury returned a unanimous verdict after about three hours of deliberation.

“You are free to leave,” Justice Roxane George, who presided over the trial, told the former accused, who expressed his gratitude to the jury before leaving the courtroom.

Kowlessar was represented by attorney-at-law Sandil Kissoon.

Meanwhile, the state’s was presented by prosecutors Orinthia Schmidt and Shawnette Austin, who called 13 witnesses to the stand.
