A convicted car burglar was yesterday back before a city court charged with breaking into yet another car.
Albert De Freitas, 50, pleaded not guilty to the charge that on August 13, he broke into the car of Mani Jagmohan and stole a quantity of articles totalling $76,000. Among the stolen items were two bottles of cologne, a CD player and $10,000.
According to the prosecution, Jagmohan had secured her vehicle on Alexander Street and went to conduct business.
Upon her return, she discovered her car was broken into and the articles mentioned in the charge were missing.
A report was made and an eyewitness related what happened.
As a result, De Freitas was arrested and charged with the offence.
With no objections to bail from the prosecution, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan placed De Freitas on $60,000 bail. He is expected to make his next court appearance before Magistrate Alex Moore on November 23.
Back in July, Magistrate Judy Latchman ordered De Freitas and another man, Bertie Gulliver, to pay a $75,000 fine after she found them guilty of breaking into a policeman’s car. According to the charge, on January 23, De Freitas and Gulliver broke into the policeman’s vehicle, which was parked on the seawalls.
