Fruta Conquerors climbed to the fourth position in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League, labouring to a 4-1 win over the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) on Sunday at the Tucville Community ground.
Kwame LaFleur, Eon Alleyne, Delon Williams and Daniel Favourite scored for the home side in the 27th, 46th, 64th and 67th minutes correspondingly. On target for the Bourda based unit was Curtis Kellman in the 50th minute.
With the win, Fruta Conquerors leapfrog the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) into the fourth position with 15 points. GFC on the other hand, remain in the seventh position with eighth points.
Entering the matchup on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Alpha United, the host started the matchup the brighter of the two sides and almost took the lead in the 14th minute as a Rafael Edwards header from the centre of the box, was tipped over the crossbar by the keeper.
The breakthrough eventually came for the home side 13 minutes onward as LaFleur placed his hot into the lower right hand corner, following a left sided pass from Dennis Edwards within the centre of the box, after the latter raced onto a through pass from Dwayne Lindy.
GFC almost levelled the score in the 34th minute but a Romario Welcome strike from the top of the box was denied by the diving custodian Alex Murray low to his left.
With the score remaining unchanged going into the second period, the home unit doubled their advantage one minute into the period as Alleyne easily slotted his effort into the lower left hand corner, after racing onto a loose ball within the right side of the box.
However, GFC quickly pulled one back four minutes later as Kellman curled a right-footed free kick from the top of the box into the right hand corner of the net.
Nonetheless a goal-keeping error by the visitors gifted the host their third goal 14 minutes later as a hopeful left sided cross from 30 yards out by Williams, was inexplicably allowed to settle into the net after the keeper misjudged the flight of the ball.
Favourite then pushed the score to 4-1 two minutes later as his right footed effort from within the centre of the box, took a slight deflection of the defender and rolled over the goal-line into the lower right hand corner despite the desperate attempt at a clearance by the keeper.
GFC then thought they has cut to deficit to two in the 79th minute as Dwayne Fordyce netted a header into the right hand corner following left sided cross from Kelsey Benjamin, only to be controversially ruled off side by the assistant referee.
The visitors eventually finished the fixture the stronger of the two sides as a Linden Picketts header in the 85th minute from within the centre of the box, was tipped over the crossbar by Murray.
In the feature contest of the night, Alpha United defeated cellar occupant Monedderlust FC to climb to second in the standings. Delon Lanferman separated the two sides with a second half conversion.
Action in the event is slated to continue on Friday at the same venue with a doubleheader. In the opening fixture at 18:00hrs, league leader Pele will oppose third placed Slingerz FC while fourth positioned Fruta Conquerors will tackle the fifth placed GDF from 20:30hrs.
