Marian Academy opened the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) Junior Age-Group Tournament in the perfect manner defeating St. Joseph’s High in both the u-15 and u-17 divisions when the event bounced off recently at the former’s Carifesta Avenue court.
In the u-17 section, Marian Academy crushed St. Joseph’s 53-24. Jonathan Mangra top scored with 16 points and four assists while Jordan Alphonso supported with 11 points and six rebounds and Jahleel Young registered nine points and as many rebounds.
For the Woolford Avenue unit, Abevia Perry and Lemuel Grant scored 11 points apiece. On the u-15 side, Marian Academy defeated St. Joseph’s by a 40-10 margin.
Alphonso led the way with 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists, five steals and four blocks while Joshua Brazao supported with 14 points and eight rebounds. For St. Joseph’s, Shaquawn Gills and Tahir Mesa scored four points each.
In the other u-17 matchup staged at the St. Rose’s Basketball Court, the home side defeated Tutorial High 40-19. Shamar Huntley was the top shooter in the win with 16 points while Joel Holford scored eight points. For the losers, Denzil Logan top scored with six points.
In the u-15 section, Tutorial exacted revenge on the hosts by winning 30-26. Zion Gray scored 13 points and had five rebounds for Tutorial while Quasi Roberts led the way for the losers with seven points and four rebounds.
