Classes at the Mae’s School were called off yesterday after a nearby power pole began sparking.
When Stabroek News visited the school around 9:15 yesterday morning, scores of students were seen in the playfield opposite the building, from where parents picked them up.
A teacher told Stabroek News that around 8:35am, an electrical spark suddenly erupted from a nearby Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) utility pole. As a result, she said the fire service was immediately alerted and firefighters promptly responded.
While the school maintained that the spark originated from the electrical pole nearby, sources informed this newspaper that it occurred in the school building.
Concerns were, however, raised by the tardy response of the GPL emergency crew, which arrived approximately 30 minutes after the call. The crew later indicated that the building was not in danger. The supply from the pole that sparked was disconnected by the GPL crew.
