Firefighters yesterday managed to contain a fire in a partially-constructed building along Alexander Street, near the Bourda Market.
The fire, which witnesses said began about 4pm, burned for about an hour in the building, located next to the New Guyana Marketing Corporation, before persons were alerted and called the fire service.
“If that was a wood building it would’ve been gone by now. We see the light long but we didn’t know what it was. Is only ’cause it new and the concrete still wet that it ain’t spread,” an eyewitness told Stabroek News
When firefighters arrived, they faced difficulty entering the building. It took them more than five minutes to cut their way into a window on the third floor, where the fire was located and put out.
Vendors in the area told Stabroek News that they don’t know what could’ve possibly started the fire since the building, which is owned by Bish and Sons, is heavily grilled. They also note that construction workers who work on the site were not seen since Monday.
