Following a District Conference hosted by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in Mabaruma on 18th October 2015, a resolution disagreeing with the government’s decision to officially declare Mabaruma a town in 2016, was presented and unanimously passed
According to a PPP press release, residents of the districts within the Mabaruma/Hosororo/Kumaka Neighbourhood Democratic Council are of the opinion that despite the improvements over the last two decades, further infrastructural development and upgrades particularly in the area of utility services need to be realised before the community can attain the status of Township.
Additionally residents emphasised what is urgently needed is the creation of more jobs to boost their wages, in order to meet the increased cost of living that will be imposed on them, in terms of the statutory requirements of the payment of rates and taxes as citizens should the district be declared a town.
