Dear Editor,
The editorial (November 1) has provided a very succinct and thoughtful perspective on the evolution of the controversy arising from Venezuela’s claims since 1962 under successive administrations for the 1899 border settlement to be invalidated. It seems Mr Jagdeo’s recent intervention about “five possible solutions” should require him to detail at greater length these proposals and to identify the sources from which such possible solutions emanated. It is rather unfortunate that Mr Jagdeo seems to have entertained a proposal for “giving Venezuela a channel out to the sea” that has been repudiated by both Forbes Burnham and Ralph Ramkarran ‒ two Guyanese political leaders who distinguished themselves in the legal profession. Did Mr Jagdeo give serious credence to this proposal on the basis of legal advice? It would be unfortunate if Mr Jagdeo’s “five possible solutions” were not informed by sound legal advice.
Yours faithfully,
Cary Fraser
