Post Offices at Meten-Meer-Zorg and Fellowship both on the West Coast of Demerara were commissioned on November 3rd after rehabilitation.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, the rehabilitation works resulted from a visit to the area by Minister of Social Protection Volda Lawrence during which she “was made aware of the level of accommodation that was available for pensioners.”
After the rehabilitation, which was a collaborative effort amongst members of the religious community, Commander of the D Division and the business community, both Post Offices are now outfitted with seating accommodation and sheds.
Lawrence said as she visited various areas in the country she heard stories of pensioners falling ill while standing in long queues awaiting their receipt of their pensions. “The country’s pensioners are precious elements of society,” the Minister said, “and that as they grow; they should be treated with dignity and respect.” Further, she noted her elation in the action that was taken to rectify the situation more so that it commenced in Region Three.
The Minister also extended her gratitude to the Guyana Post Office Corporation, which is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure, for embracing the initiative.
Minister in the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson, who was also present at the commissioning ceremony, said during her tenure, post offices countrywide will be transformed to ensure pensioners and other citizens transact their businesses in a comfortable and clean environment.
