Ten persons lost their home when a fire gutted a Cummings Lodge house early yesterday morning.
Stabroek News was unable to contact the owners of the two-storey wooden and concrete house, which was divided into different apartments.
A neighbour, however, recalled being awakened by shouts from one of the occupants of the house. “About two this morning, I hear me neighbour calling for me hard, hard and I jump out me bed. At first, I thought it was a thief ’cause of how she de calling and when I do peep through I see fire downstairs,” the man, who did not want to be named, said.
He explained that he then rushed out along with other neigbours and tried to put out the fire. “We try and try but we couldn’t do anything much. It was blazing too hot and consuming everything,” he said.
He said that while the fire service responded quickly, it was too late to save anything by the time firefighters arrived.
“They ain’t tek long but they couldn’t save anything. But if it wasn’t for them my house wouldn’t have been here and it would’ve been burnt down too,” he added.
The man said that he understands that the fire started from the kitchen in the lower flat, where someone was heard cooking.
