Cabinet has greenlit contracts for the transformation of Durban Park into a “Green Zone Recreational Park,” in time for Guyana’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, Minster of Governance Raphael Trotman announced on Thursday.
The goal of the rehabilitation works is to redesign the location into a site similar to that of the Washington Monument area in the United States. Trotman explained that the overgrown vegetation will be removed in order to create a recreational facility where persons of all ages can exercise or simply relax.
Trotman hinted that some of the 50th anniversary activities may be held at the refurbished park but clarified that there will be no single venue hosting all the events, which are to be dispersed countrywide.
The Minister indicated that concerns were raised with government regarding the seating capacity for persons who wish to attend various events, bearing in mind what transpired at the President’s Inauguration earlier this year; the National Stadium, at Providence on the East Bank of Demerara, reached maximum capacity, forcing security to close the gates on thousands.
However, a concrete plan has not yet been formulated for the celebrations, Trotman explained. “…I believe there is some discussion about that but I don’t believe there has been a definitive outcome.”
