Limacol ‘freshens up’ GTT knockout football tourney

The Limacol brand became the latest sponsor to throw its weight behind the inaugural Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company GTT Knockout Football Championship, donating an undisclosed sum yesterday to coordinators the Petra Organization during a press briefing.

Staged at the Brands-ville Hotel, Marketing Manager of New GPC Jagmohan Bassoo said that the company was elated to be a part of the tourney.

He added that the entity strongly believes in investing in sport which helps to develop young people, communities and the country as a whole.

As a Guyanese company, the institution is committed to the development of sports locally and will continue to do that for the foreseeable future, said Bassoo before declaring:” I wish all the teams and the players the best of luck and may the best team win.”

Finance Director of the company Dwayne Lovell, during brief remarks, said that the company is pleased to be involved with the inaugural tournament.

“May the best team win but more importantly, let football win, “exhorted Lovell.

Also making remarks were Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Technical Director Claude Bolton who commended the Petra Organization for their flexibility in changing their initial vision, noting that the teams should use this event as tool in preparation for more football whether at the GFF or association level.

Bolton further said that the aim is to ensure the sport is consistently played at all levels and at every association while wishing all the competing teams the best of luck.

The tourney will officially commence today at the No. #5 ground in Berbice with a doubleheader.

In the opening fixture, Winners Connection will oppose Rosignol United while NA United will tackle Milerock in the feature contest.

Programmed to feature teams from the Upper Demerara, Berbice and East Demerara Football Associations, the event will be played initially in a round-robin format. Eight teams will be divided into two groups of four, with the group winners advancing to the knockout round.

The respective group runners-up and third place side will then match skills in a single playoff match for the two other semi-final berths.

The tourney will run until December 2.

Representing the East Coast will be Victoria Kings, Ann’s Grove and Golden Grove while the Upper Demerara contingent will be Topp XX, Milerock and Winners Connection. Berbice will be represented by Rosignol United and New Amsterdam (NA) United.

Group-A will comprise of Golden Grove, Winners Connection, Rosignol United and Victoria Kings while group-B will feature NA United, Topp XX, Ann’s Grove and Milerock.

Winner of the event will pocket $500,000 and the championship trophy while the second place side will pocket $250,000 and the respective accolade. The third place side will receive $125,000 and a trophy while the fourth positioned unit will collect $75,000 and the respective accolade.
