When national cyclist, Alanzo Greaves staged his belated ‘Birthday Classic’ yesterday in the National Park, it was dominated by the wheelsmen with the surname of Williams.
In perfect conditions for racing, Geron and Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams (no relation) finished one-two in the 30-lap fixture after pocketing 20 of the 25 sprint prizes worth $1000 each between them.
Geron, of Continental and Marlon of Team Gillette Evolution, broke away from the peloton in the 11th lap and never let up. The two namesakes rode in tandem to hold off the chasers, in the process of racking up sprint prize after sprint prize.
However, with 200m to go, Marlon, who snapped up 13 sprint prizes, threw team work out the window and attacked Geron. The Continental cyclist responded and changed gears in an effort to grab the top podium spot. Marlon was barreling to the line and was slightly ahead inches to go but the patented bike chuck by Geron handed him the win by mere centimeters.
Greaves, who celebrated his 26th birth anniversary on September 26, won the bunch sprint to take third position. Along with the sprint prizes, the top three riders were rewarded with $12,000, $10,000 and $8000 each in the second annual ‘Alanzo Greaves Birthday Classic’.
Following the fixture, the incentives were distributed by Greaves daughter, Trinity and his wife Jenel.
Greaves also thanked the riders for competing and making the event a success. (Emmerson Campbell)
