History will be created today when first time finalists and statistical giants St. Angela’s and Enterprise Primary faceoff today in the fourth annual Courts Pee-Wee Under-11 Championship match at the Thirst Park venue from 16:00hrs.
St. Angela’s sealed their berth to the finale after defeating West Ruimveldt 1-0 while Enterprise downed former holders St. Pius 3-1 on penalty kicks.
While there is very little to separate the two teams, St. Angela’s will enter the matchup as the marginal favourite due to their all-round capabilities.
From the attacking standpoint, the Thomas Street unit has netted a tourney leasing 25 goals in the event over the six matches.
Tourney top scorer Keyon Douglas leads the way with 14 conversions while the likes of Antonio McArthur, Nickone Dover, Antwoine Vincent and Kenroy Cadogan have provided support with three, three, two and two goals respectively.
On the defensive side, St. Angela’s have been even more formidable as they have secured six clean sheets to date, a record shared by only one other team in the tournament. Similarly, Enterprise possess the statistics to warrant confidence entering the match.
Akin to their foe, the Durban Backlands based unit has recorded 23 goals led by their dangerous strike force of Seon Archibald, Martin King and Garfield Caesar who have scored nine, eighth and six goals respectively.
With regards to the rearguard numbers, Enterprise are equally impressive as they have only conceded once to date over their campaign, with their only concession coming in their 3-1 defeat of former holder Stella Maris.
While the finale promises to be an exciting affair, the third place matchup at 15:00hrs could easily steal the show as fierce rivals West Ruimveldt and St. Pius faceoff in what will be a rematch of the 2013 finale.
St. Pius will enter the matchup with the psychological edge after the aforesaid meeting resulted in a 3-2 victory.
Offensively, the Middle Road based unit has recorded 16 goals in the event. Selwyn Jones leads the scoring chart with four conversions while Sherwin Nelson, Brandon Selman and Christian Jupiter have provided capable support with three, three and two conversions apiece.
From the defensive end, the former winner has been simply spectacular as they are yet to concede in the tournament, being one of only two teams that have achieved this feat.
On the other hand, West Ruimveldt possess a marginally better scoring record as they have recorded 17 goals thus far, with the trident of Michael Oie, Justin Persaud and Mark Cameron leading the way with six, five and four goals each.
Though their offensive numbers have been on par with most of the elite teams in the event, their defensive statistics need improvement as they have conceded four times in the six matches, with three of their concessions coming in the knockout round.
This problem must be remedied if they are to exact revenge on their arch-rival. The 5-8 division section will pit St. Margaret’s against former holders South Ruimveldt and Tucville Primary against former holders Stella Maris at 12:00hrs respectively.
In the 9-12 positional section, St. Agnes will oppose North Georgetown from 11:00hrs while Smith Memorial will lock horns with St. Stephen in the 11:00hrs round of fixtures.
In the 13-16 divisional section, Winfer Gardens will oppose St. Ambrose from 10:00hrs while F.E. Pollard will oppose Comenius Primary in the second matchup of the section.
Winners of the tourney will receive the championship trophy, medals, a set of team uniforms and certificates while the runners-up will collect the second place trophy, medals, six footballs and certificates.
The third placed side will receive the respective trophy, four balls and certificates while fourth placed will be presented with a trophy and certificates. The most discipline team will also be presented with a trophy.
On the individual side, the most valuable player, highest goal scorer and best goalkeeper will each receive a trophy and football cleats.
