PNCR Vice-Chairman Volda Lawrence says that the party remains committed to national unity.
She was speaking at the annual regional delegates’ conference held in Pomeroon-Supenaam (Region Two) on Saturday, a release from Congress Place said.
Lawrence, who is the Minister of Social Protection in the APNU+AFC government, recognized what the release reported as the PNCR “once again assuming office”. The PNCR is part of the coalition government by virtue of being the major player in APNU.
The release said that before delivering her address, Lawrence led the gathering in the singing of “To God Be the Glory in recognition of the PNCR once again assuming office”.
She asserted that the PNCR never turned its back on the future of Guyana and spoke on the need for unity to achieve national consensus.
Lawrence said that the new Ministry of Social Cohesion is working towards repairing the torn fabric of society and seeking to bring about national unity. She added that the Party is committed to its ideals: “even though we may think of a Government under a new leadership; it is committed to its philosophy of one people, one nation fulfilling one destiny. The Party will never falter from pursuing this motto which we, Guyanese, have adopted several years ago.”
The Vice-Chairman Lawrence also quoted PNC Founder Leader, Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham from his inaugural speech in 1964 where he said:
“This Government holds that all the peoples of this country are equally important whether they belong to a large group or a small group. To us the Amerindians are important, to us the Chinese are important, to us the Portuguese are important, to us the Europeans are important, to us the mixed races are important, to us the Africans are important, and to us the East Indians are important.”
She added that, “… to build this country, a Government of national unity must see all of its people as important and that is the Government that you have today.”
The election of office bearers was conducted by Fitzroy Corlette.
