Stanleytown fisherman charged with armed robbery

A Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara resident pleaded not guilty to armed robbery yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on November 9, Richard Bourne, 43, armed with an offensive weapon robbed Roopnarine Sawh of 1 silver chain valued $35,000, gold and silver hand bands valued $35,000 and $45,000, a total value of $117,000.

According to the prosecution, Bourne, who is a fisherman, allegedly placed a knife to the complainant’s body as soon as he was about to enter his car and robbed him of his possessions. An alarm was subsequently raised by the complainant and the accused who ran was chased and apprehended by public-spirited persons and plainclothes police.

 

Bourne, pleaded not guilty to the offence and was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. The accused is expected to be back in court on December 14 for statements.
