(Continued from last week)
Heliconias make excellent table and floor fresh flower arrangements and can be found in hotel lobbies, malls, banks, churches and reception halls.
The plus is that they are long lasting blooms.
Every year at the Chelsea Flower Show which is held in May in London, the horticultural societies of Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago do grand displays with different themes using a variety of heliconias and ginger lilies. They usually gain one of the three top prizes.
At the recent Festival of Flowers held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Brickdam, many varieties of heliconias were used in the magnificent displays.
Some popular Heliconias are:-
Heliconia rostrata – Hanging pendant; comes in Red or Yellow
Heliconia caribaea – Lobster Claw; Red
Heliconia latispatha – Orange
Heliconia wagneriana – Yellow and Red
Heliconia Sexy Pink – Pink & Green Pendant
Heliconia arrangements can last for approximately two weeks.
In Guyana most home owners who have large yards tend to plant heliconias alongside their fences. So if you have the space why not try some?!
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
