A fire of unknown origin destroyed an unoccupied two-storey house at La Grange, West Bank Demerara, early yesterday morning.
The fire started at approximately 6 am at the house, which is located directly behind the La Grange Police Station.
A man whom residents identified as having once resided at the house was said to be in Linden at the time and efforts to contact him yesterday proved futile.
A resident said he and his family were awakened by loud voices coming from the roadway and as he tried to get a glimpse of what was happening he saw thick smoke coming from the upper flat of the wooden house.
The fire lasted for approximately 20 minutes and concerns were raised about the absence of a nearby fire station. The fire was eventually brought under control with the assistance of residents and a Guyana Sugar Corporation fire tender that responded.
