BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Stylish right-hander Shamarh Brooks was targeting his second century of the game as Barbados Pride increased their stranglehold over Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in their Regional First Class Championship contest here yesterday.
At the close of the second day, Pride were 171 for three in their second innings – an overall lead of 225 runs heading into today’s final day at Kensington Oval.
The 27-year-old Brooks, who carved out 111 in the first innings, was unbeaten on 51 while captain Kraigg Brathwaite struck 72 and West Indies counterpart Shai Hope, 25.
Earlier, Red Force were dismissed for 246 half-hour after lunch after resuming the day on 153 for five, as they added 93 runs for their last five wickets.
Steven Katwaroo, unbeaten on 27 overnight, top-scored with 64 while Yannic Ottley, on 26 at the start, made 45.
The pair extended their sixth wicket partnership to 92 before being separated when Ottley edged an out-swinger from seamer Kevin Stoute and was caught at the wicket.
He faced 95 balls in 129 minutes at the crease and counted three fours and two sixes.
Katwaroo lost Imran Khan for eight and captain Rayad Emrit for 20 before he was ninth out after batting for 193 minutes, facing 166 balls and striking nine fours, bowled middle stump by the enterprising Stoute.
Right-armer Stoute picked up four for 54, fast bowler Miguel Cummins, three for 65, while Kemar Roach finished with two for 38.
In their second turn at the crease, Pride rammed home their advantage as Brathwaite put on 38 for the first wicket with Kyle Corbin (16) before adding a further 44 for the second wicket with Hope.
Corbin was lbw to Imran Khan pushing forward tentatively while Hope was caught at the wicket off left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh.
Brathwaite, who faced 151 balls in 169 minutes at the crease and hit six fours, also posted 84 for the third wicket with Brooks before perishing in the fourth over before the close, lbw after missing a sweep at off-spinner Narsingh Deonarine. Brooks has so far faced 77 balls and counted six fours.
